Travel Sketches

Travel sketching can be done anywhere you adventure, even just walking up and down the aisles of your local thrift store. Take pen and paper and sketch what strikes you.

China Painting Trip

On a tour in China in 2011, I was traveling down the LI River on a river barge. It was announced on loudspeaker: We are now passing the famous "9 Horse Mountain". The guide passed around an old laminated picture, though no one could "detect any horses at all" on the karst stone mountains.

When we arrived at our destination hotel in Yangzhou, I sat on my bed and sketched "my made-up version", putting 9 horses throughout (some see even more)!? I used 3 pens, with 3 different water-soluble inks : black, blue-black and sepia.

Note:  During that river ride, my camera somehow slipped off my wrist and fell into and sunk in the water…gone forever - my photos of 3 weeks in China! When I got back home, many folks on the tour sent me cd discs of their photos!

In appreciation, I sent them card stock copies of this sketch!
